Capturing the complexity of 3D biology: Organoids for disease modelling and toxicity research

In this presentation, we describe automated cell culture and a high-content imaging method that allow monitoring and characterization of growth and differentiation of intestinal and lung organoids, including toxicity effects. The increase in size and complexity of developing organoids was monitored during eight weeks of development. We demonstrate concentration-dependent toxicity effects of several drugs that have been known to cause lung damage. In addition, responses to several anti-cancer drugs are monitored in tumoroids derived from primary tumor tissues.
